How Does Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Correlate to Education?
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory delineating the five categories of human needs that dictate human behavior. Those needs, often depicted as a pyramid, begin with the physiological at the bottom and proceed through the layers of safety, love and belonging, and esteem, ending with self-actualization (reaching one’s full potential) at the very top.
The benefits of career readiness line up with each need. Physical needs are more easily met if a person is able to work and attain economic stability, and the feeling of safety comes once vulnerabilities are mitigated. Education also connects a student to the community, conveying a deeper sense of belonging. As Maheswari, an educational scholarship recipient said, “I still remember when I was hungry and my mother only had water to give me. But today my sisters and I are educated and we can take care of our mother. Relatives who shunned us when we needed help now interact with us as equals. My life totally changed because of an educational scholarship.”
Knowledge also increases self esteem and confidence, the fourth need. Once a person has been elevated through learning, it becomes much easier to achieve self- actualization.
Our hope at Tiyara is that, as a result of our scholarships, students embark on a lifetime of learning and growth that stretches beyond their years of study. Education is a window to so many things, and we’re committed to expanding the horizons of as many young Indians as we can. A donation can assist us with our mission.
"Tiyara is a bright initiative to bring hope to young people and develop tomorrow’s leaders via educational scholarships. Join me in supporting Tiyara’s model of elevating lives through career-ready education and its multi-generational impact."
